Spring has sprung and so has a Spring floral idea using twigs and branches

Spring Pansies Boy, it hit me hard today. The sun is shining and the temps are in the 50’s. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be in the 60’s and the next day in the 70’s! Spring sprang and I’m all for it. I wanted so much to do something “garden-y” today. I’m guessing you may, too. So here’s a REALLY frugal idea for you using branches or twigs, bulbs, terra cotta pots and potting soil. Really super simple, too.

1. Wet the terra cotta pot before you put the soil and bulbs in it.

2. Dampen the soil - I put mine in a bowl, poor in some water, and stir with a spoon. You want the soil damp, but not soaked. Wetting it in advance helps to make watering easier later.

3. Put a layer of soil in your pot. Put some bulbs on top. Put as many as you can without having any touch each other.

4. Add more soil and more bulbs until the pot is full. Your very top row can be near the rim as long as it’s not sticking too far out of the soul (”not too far” would be about a half inch).

5. Poke the twigs and branches into the soil, pushing them far enough in to be secure. The twigs provide both support for long bulb stems and an interesting contrast to the delicacy of the flowers.

6. Water. Here’s where your wet soil will help you. It won’t pack down that much, and water won’t run off the top of the pot like it frequently does with dry potting soil.

Here’s what you can expect to see when your bulbs bloom (click on the pictures to see a bigger view):

I’m off to play in the dirt!
