April Fool’s Day - And I feel like I was the prankster!

Spring HatHaving had a shop of my own, I’m not really “happy”  when I hear a store is going out of business. I know  how much work goes into setting up and running any kind of retail establishment. And I know what work it takes to move one or to close one down.

So when Jo-Ann’s Fabrics announced that they would be closing one of the two stores in my area, that didn’t make me smile. Frugal or not, the “retailer” in me was sad to see them go.

I have been in the store three times since the announcement was made…..that’s probably one more visit than I would have “normally” made during that timeframe.

Today (Visit Three) I hit the jackpot.

The Frugal Decorating Diva took over, and she didn’t stop until there were TWO carts full ( and I do mean FULL) of stuff - all at 80%-90% off.

Was I guilty about profiting from someone else’s “misfortune”? I was not! And do you want to know why? Because between Visit Number Two and Visit Number Three (just a few days later), I noticed something. There was MORE stuff! I don’t mean a “little” more stuff - I mean A LOT more stuff!

So much “new” stuff that there was a sign on the door that said “New Merchandise Arriving Weekly”. Huh? New stuff arriving at a store that was shutting down? Yes siree!

On Visit Two, I saw that fleece was 80% off (but I had to buy the whole bolt). No problem. There were two bolts and I happened to REALLY like one of them. So I bought it.

Today, I go in, and I could not believe my eyes - there had to be fifty bolts of fleece in there, if there was one. I bought seven more bolts, along with pre-packaged fleece that was a quarter (as in twenty five cents) a pack.

On Visit Two, all Christmas decor was 90% off. I scoured the two aisle of Christmas stuff, looking, looking, looking. I found a couple of small things. TODAY, there was SO MUCH STUFF that wasn’t there a few days ago! There was also Halloween, Valentines Day, and fall stuff - all at 90% off.

I stood there looking at all the choices, when it hit me. I wasn’t profiting from someone’s misfortune - I was helping a corporation move inventory that they could not move at other locations. I was HELPING them. I was definitely helping ME, too, at those prices, but I WAS helping them.

I don’t know how long the “new merchandise” will continue arriving. I do know, however, that I intend to do my part to help move that inventory from their “place” to mine, at 80%-90% off, thank you very much!

What places of business are you helping out right now? All of us inquiring repurposers would like to know!

Your Decorating Diva,

Nancy
