One of the things that I try to do with designs where appropriate, is to create them in such a way that they can multi-task. Such is a case with this design. Not only does it serve as a footstool to rest my weary toes, but it also doubles as storage for whatever your heart desires. This design will allow you to open the suitcase footstool and stash stuff inside.
The key to having that extra storage is to glue the accents used on the footstool AFTER the footstool assembly is completed. Here’s how:
You’ll need:
* A suitcase
* Foam padding big enough to cover the top of the suitcase
* 1 yard or so of fabric (mine took much less than that because my suitcase was small - your mileage will vary)
* 1 or 2 large safety pins
* 4 short legs - mine were 8 inches long
* 4 large screws to attach the legs with
* 2 black belts
* Hot glue and a glue gun
1. Using the screws, attach the legs to the suitcase. Open the suitcase, and screw the legs on, one in each corner. I used an electric screw driver to do mine - it was easier on my hands.
2. If necessary, trim your foam padding to fit the top of your suitcase.
3. Wrap your foam piece with your fabric, just like you would wrap a package. Use the large safety pin to pin the ends that you would normally tape down. My fabric was long enough that I only needed one pin. You may need two.
4. Glue your wrapped foam to the top of your suitcase.
5. Take both of your belts and buckle them, so that they look good.
6. Once buckled, cut them in half at the back of the belt. Glue one belt to the left side of your footstool and one to the right side. Trim the belts so that the ends rest where the suitcase opens. Use my picture as a guide.
That does it. Sit down and rest your feet, in comfort!Oh, and stash some goodies inside - no one but you will know!
