Cabin Decorating

I recently got asked a question about "cabin decorating".

Question: Other than putting animals mounted on the walls, what inexpensive suggestions do any of you have to achieve a rustic cabin/lodge look for a 1000 sq. ft. hunting getaway? We plan on putting up taupe siding with dark green shutters(matching the green roof). We'll be redoing the entire interior. Help!!!

Before I share my answer, do you have ideas on this topic? Feel free to share them with me! And for great frugal decorating tips, get my free ezine.

Now, on to my answer:

Some of the following ideas can be mixed and matched because they have the same look at feel, so you aren't stuck using just ONE of any of the following:

1. Cast/Wrought iron. It fits in well with this theme. It has been used in making curtain rods, towel bars, cooking pots and pans, bed frames and head boards and lots, lots more. It's a black metal that definitely has the right "look".

2. Plaids/Bandanas/Jeans. When it comes to cabin fabrics, red is a really good color - but certainly not the only one you can work with. Fabric prints in plaids look right at home in a cabin. So do bandanas - clipped together to make curtains, tied around a wreath, used as placemats, and even table napkins.

The same is true of blue jean fabric. You can use new fabric from stores, or re-purpose your jeans into pillows, chair seat covers, plant pot covers, quilt squares - so many things!

3. You can also look to nature for ideas. Branches/twigs, stones/rocks, bird nests, wasp nests, seeds/seed pods - also sorts of stuff can be used to cover picture frames, mirror rims, and flowers pots, or used in home interior designs for tablescapes.

4. Because cabins tend to be small, I suggest that you "use" what you have to decorate with, as well. Hang chicken wire on a wall in the kitchen and, using hooks, hang stuff off the chicken wire - both for extra storage and for great wall art.

I hung a small ladder from the ceiling of mine, and hung lots of stuff off of that.

Hang plates and platters on walls, and mugs off cup hooks - all in easy reach but also part of the cabin's mystique.

5. You can even use your clothes as decor. Scarves or hats hung over lamp shades look great. Old boots and shoes make perfect planters. Shirts can be stuffed and made into pillows.

Enjoy your decorating. I *LOVE* my cabin!
