Library
I love to create. I love to write. I love to share. This library is a combination of all of those loves. Below are a list of articles I've written or have permission to reprint, and projects I've created. Feel free to let your creativity run wild! For even more ideas, read my Frugal By Design blog, my Ask the Frugal Decorating Diva blog, and the Frugal By Design ezine. I add ideas there often. And show me all the cool things you've come up with. I want to learn from you, too! And, while we're sharing, I really like Bargain Clicks' high quality home decor. BargainClicks.com offers tips and suggestions on a
variety of home decorating styles including Contemporary,
Asian, Southwestern, Cottage/Shabby Chic, Country, Egyptian,
and Tropical.
Now, on to those projects and ideas! Turn a frame into a table.. Take an old, outdated framed clock and turn it into a great "collection" display table.
How to make a "book " lamp. Using five different "parts" and about an hour, you can turn three books into a very nice office, library or family room lamp.
Repurpose ceiling globes into beautiful candlescapes. One of the simpliest pieces you can make - and very easy to personalize using shells, stones, potpourri, small hardware, WHATEVER.
Ivy in terra cotta pots make great wedding reception table centerpieces and do double duty as wedding guest favors.
Silverware cabinet door handles will make all your cabinets stand out from stock cabinetry. You can also use this technique on the doors and drawers of furniture pieces, like a hutch or buffet.
Teacup collectors and teacup lovers will find a very unique way to use their pieces. REALLY simply, these teacups can also hold plantings of herbs right outside of the kitchen door.
Tomato cages all decked out in Christmas lights, this piece can be used year around - outside or in.
Clean with "ingredients" found around your house. Things like ketchup, vinegar, and baking soda make great cleaners for a fraction of the price of traditional "cleaners".
While putting in new floors might seem to be the "right" way to go, a more frugal and environmentally friendly way to go is to paint your floors. Painting floors is ultimately a time saver, and causes much less mess than replacing floors does. They look great and can be long-lasting.
Fabric is used for all kinds of window covering applications, including fabric blinds, curtains, vertical blinds, roman shades, valances, and window scarves. One great thing about fabric is that there is so much variety available that you can find fabric that goes with just about any decorating style you have or want to create.
One of the biggest problems for people when "small space decorating" is storage. Even for collectors it can easily become a problem, no matter what size space they are working with.
Windows are a constant in all the places that we live, work and play. They look out over scenes of other people where they live, work and play. They provide both a decorating opportunity and added privacy. No wonder we look for as many options for "cheap" curtains for use in our spaces as possible.
Scarves are still one of the most beautiful fabric pieces available today. Their original use, as an accessory for an outfit, has never gone out of style. We have worn them around our neck, wrapped around our head and in the pockets of our clothing.I am finding that I really love decorating with them as well.
Bathrooms are usually one of the smallest rooms in our homes, and they bring with them, some of the most important storage needs. If your bathroom could use more storage options, this article on bathroom storage will be of interest to you.
Are you tired of the plain, boring doors that are so common for bedrooms and bathrooms? What can be done to spruce them up without replacing them? LOTS of things! Find out what here!
I get asked a lot of decorating questions. One of the most recent ones was about cottage decorating. That happens to be a style I really like myself. See the question and my answer here.
We want to decorate our historical, prarie home in western and prairie decor. There's no budget for this AND acquiring new pieces or supplies would be very difficult. Any ideas?
I was recently asked about cabin decorating. I happen to have a little cabin myself, so this was an easy one for me. See the question and my answer here.
One of the least decorated areas of a home are the stair risers. For some great ideas on doing just that, visit here.
