Tea Cup Fence

Ok, as you may be finding out as you check out these free instructions, I REALLY like to make accessories and decorative changes that are EASY ( meaning that they don't require a lot of hard-to-find and/or expensive materials and/or tools) and are QUICK to do. That is very true with this "Tea Cup Fence" project as well. Let's assume you HAVE the fence - this will work on any wood fence the way I did it, and for those of you with metal-drilling skills, it will work on metal fences as well. So here's your supply list:

  • 1 - Tea cup and saucer set. They don't even have to match if you don't want them to.
  • 1 - White metal 6-inch "L" bracket (can be painted, if desired)
  • Strong Glue - I used Super Glue
  • 2 - short wood screws
  • Plant/Flowers - Silk or real (If real, put the plant in a pot that has drainage and set the POT into the tea cup. Doing this will be better for the plant)

Ok, easy assembly:

  1. 1. Using the Super Glue, glue the tea cup and saucer together (but not your fingers, please!)
  2. 2. If painting the bracket, do so now. The main reason you may want to paint the bracket is to make it "disappear" as much as possible. Mine stayed white because the fence it was going on was white and the saucer had a lot of white in it. Once the arrangement was all done, people told me they didn't see the bracket unless I pointed it out to them. You're going for the same effect.
  3. 3. Once dry (if painted), attach one leg of the 6-inch "L" bracket to the fence where you want the arrangement to be. Use the 2 wood screws to do this.
  4. If using silk flowers, vines or other plants, make your arrangement in the tea cup next.If using real plants, skip this step. The Super Glue should be dry, so you should be able to move the tea cup and saucer around as a single unit to do this. It does not take many silk flowers or plants to fill a tea cup so you can make it as lavish as you wish with no great cost.
  5. Again, using Super Glue, attach the arrangement to the free leg of the "L" bracket. Now a couple logistics here. Many saucers have a "lip" on their bottom, surrounding an indented center. If you put the Super Glue in the indented center, not much of it will come in contact with the leg of your "L" bracket, making the "connection" very weak. You can fix this by:

    1. Putting the Super Glue on the ridge itself, in the two places where the saucer will come in contact with the "l" bracket leg.
    2. Putting a LOT of glue in the center area so there is enough glue to make a good seal with the "L" bracket.
    3. Do BOTH of the above.
    4. Use an adhesive used in aquarium repairs. It's a thicker consistency than Super Glue, and works well with "glass-to- metal" seals.

And as I said before, if you are using real plants, put the plant in a pot that has drainage and set the POT into the tea cup. Doing this will be better for the plant.

That's it! Make several and scatter them around a garden area. Have fun!

Extra Tip:

For those of you planning an outdoor wedding, these would look GREAT as part of your wedding decor. They could be mounted on posts, wooden chairs, tent poles (unless you rented the tent) - LOTS of places. And you could put candles in them instead of flowers - tea lights, votives, even floating candles!
